Add to basketAn exhaustive and sympathetic biography of Rhee, a towering, yet divisive figure in modern Korean history. Born into an aristocratic family in late dynastic Korea, Rhee received both a classical Confucian and a Western education. He became a political activist in early adulthood, resisting both the old imperial order and the Japanese occupation, and suffered imprisonment and exile as a result. Returning at the end of WWII, he rose to become the first President of South Korea (1948-1960). The present volume, written in the middle of this term of office, is the most detailed portrait of his early life in English. Light soiling of the cover and spine, internal pages clean and unmarked. xiii, 380 pp., 14 b&w photos. Size: 22 x 15 cm.
