A first edition of this illustrated ornithological study of China. First edition. Illustrated with many in-text maps and diagrams. An ornithological study of China, including details of all birds recorded from China comprising 1,186 species with an additional 953 subspecies, classified under 81 families and 21 orders. Written by Cheng Tso-Hsin, a Chinese ornithologist known for his seminal work on the birds of China and mentoring a generation of researchers. Educated in the United States, he chose to stay in China after the Second World War while many of his colleagues fled to Taiwan, he was severely punished under the Cultural Revolution despite being a member of the Communist Party. In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and a small mark to the front board. Original unclipped dust wrapper also very smart with light shelf wear only.
