He started in the autumn of 1890 with William O'Brien, John Dillon, T.D. Sullivan, Timothy Harrington, and T.P. Gill; he took his wife with him. --- The Tour began well. For the Home Rule Cause the Irish in America were not less enthusiastic than the Irish in Ireland. Not only were the halls and theatres in which the delegates spoke crowded with people willing to give generously; on the platforms sat governors of States, mayors of cities, bishops, leading citizens in all walks of life --- At a New York meeting, £7,000 were promised. Man after man rose and said he would give a thousand dollars (£200). There was reason to hope that £200,000 would be collected before the Irish M.Ps returned home. As in 1881, T.P.s speeches delighted his hearers; he was again proclaimed by the newspapers to be an orator in the authentic Irish tradition.' (pages 158-159, Chps. VIII & IX) ' ***'The Right Honourable T. P. O'Connor was both as well known and as warmly liked as any public man of the last half-century. His career in politics covered that period. As a journalist his record went further back and is quite as interesting as his activities in the House of Commons, of which he was for some time the very popular "Father." But the main attraction of this book is the man himself. T. P. was all his life not merely a delightful, but an exciting character. He made newspaper history: he was the real founder of the New Journalism, He was closely connected with the happenings of a particularly vivid political age. Throughout he remained a charming, many-sided, original Irishman with a deep love for his country but strong disinclination to live in it. His youth in Galway, his love affairs, his rise to fame from grinding poverty, his wit, his friendships, his large earnings and incessant impecuniosity, make up a most entertaining as well as an instructive volume.' ***First impression of the true first edition, extremely hard to find complete in its original, fragile 1930s dustwrapper. Of interest to historians and collectors of first editions on Irish history, journalism and politics. ***Rare.***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # IR011
