Third impression of the true first American edition, with the following number-string sequence: 81 82 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 on the printer's page, indicating a 1981 date of publication for this impression. Large format trade paperback original - published in wraparound pictorial map covers with a key to locations of the story. Colophon Books CN654. The stories were originally published serially in the San Francisco Chronicle. ***Very good in illustrated card covers, with black titles to the spine and front cover. The covers are clean and unmarked but do show some rubbing and creasing at the edges commensurate with age and handling. No bumps or serious creases and no tears. No reading creases to the spine, and no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Covers bright and the spine remains clean. Page block edges somewhat grubby and foxed slightly. Internally also very good with no ownership inscriptions - however, please note that there are some pencil notes on one of the blank pages at the end of the book (could be rubbed out - please see scans). Pages slightly marked and foxed, but no creases or tears. ***232mm x186mm. 240 pages plus six blank sheets at the end. ***'Armistead Jones Maupin, Jr. (born May 13, 1944) is an American writer notable for "Tales of the City" (1978), a series of novels set in San Francisco. It is the first book in the Tales of the City series, originally serialized in the Pacific Sun (beginning in 1974) and then the San Francisco Chronicle. Set in 1970s San Francisco, it follows the residents of a small apartment complex at 28 Barbary Lane, including the eccentric landlady, Anna Madrigal. Maupin said that early on he kept gay character Michael "low-key", feeling that the newspaper would "say no if they saw what I was up to". He was more comfortable bringing gay characters in when the column gained a solid following.' (Wiki) ***A third impression of the true first American edition in very good condition. Most uncommon to find in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
