About this Item
First impression of the first edition thus - a compilation taken from two of Henry Williamson's pre-war books: "The Village Book" and "The Labouring Life". Another volume - "Life in a Devon Village" - was also published in 1945 as a companion to this book. Henry Williamson was not satisfied with the original two books, as they were a collection of varying fragments written between the two 'industrial' world wars of the twentieth century, and so he re-grouped the fragments into more of a whole after several years working as a farmer and labourer. ***Very good in jade-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good printed price-clipped dustwrapper. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just slight loss to the head and tail of the spine and a small chip to the top corner of the front panel. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. Very small loss and rubbing to the corner tips. Two very small closed tears to the top edge of the front panel. Spine and white back panel of dustwrapper slightly discoloured. Very thin surface marks to front panel. ***190mm x 130mm. 224 pages including Index and Bibliography at the back of the book. ***'When Mr. Henry Williamson went to live in a thatched cottage in a North Devon village after the last war, he entered into the life about him with great zest; and several books of the period were published, but reached only a limited public. Now he has regrouped the books; and the first to reappear contains the stories, most of them written with a light, amusing touch, in "Tales of a Devon Village", which covers the ten years of his life in the village. Mr Williamson is well known for his animal and country books; but here, we think, another aspect of him is revealed, and one that should bring him the wide public that his varied talents deserve.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first edition, hard to find now complete in the original thin and fragile wartime dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of the work of Henry Williamson, as well as local history and nature books about Devon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 6227z
