First impression of the true first edition. With a monochrome frontispiece of Alfred Tennyson, 1838 by Samuel Laurence and a twelve-page introduction by W. H. Auden, who also made the selection of poems. ***Very good in royal-blue textured cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Boards clean and unmarked, with just a small patch of fading to the cloth at the top of the spine on the edge where the dustwrapper has been creased. No bumping. Corners sharp. Page block edges slightly foxed but not affecting the interior pages or pastedowns. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just slight rubbing to the extremities, which are also slightly nicked and creased. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Small closed tear to the head of the spine of the dustwrapper, and a small closed tear to the top edge of the back panel of the dustwrapper. Very small closed tear to the bottom edge of the back panel of the dustwrapper. Light scuff to the bottom of the back panel where a price-label has been removed. Rear panel slightly yellowed and marked (being a white matt background). Front panel and spine of dustwrapper bright. ***266 pages. 192mm x 134mm. ***'In this volume a distinguished contemporary poet discusses the work of the great Victorian in an Introduction running to five thousand words: as a social phenomenon, as "an Unacknowledged legislator", and as a poet. He then proceeds to extract from the mass of Tennyson's work the poetry which he feels has significance for the reader today.'
