First edition. In nineteenth century Japan, popular actors in Kabuki theatre were depicted in woodcuts by artists who printed their portraits and pictured their exploits for the delight of their fans. A group of artists in Osaka were chiefly responsible for most of the Kabuki prints that exist today. A major exhibition of these prints was shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1973.
