About this Item

Description:

Historians of the early debate on the Wegenerian continental drift hypothesis all point to the 1926 symposium of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and this publication, which purports to be papers given at the meeting in New York, as instrumental in turning American geologists against Alfred Wegener (1880-1930). His hypothesis remained controversial and was widely rejected by mainstream geology until the 1950s, when numerous discoveries such as palaeomagnetism provided strong support for continental drift, and thereby a substantial basis for today's model of plate tectonics. Octavo: x, 240 p. with 29 figures. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt titles. The period ink ownership inscription of petroleum geologist Thomas Cleon Hiestand (1901-79) appears on the front flyleaf. Faint stain to the spine; otherwise very good. Seller Inventory # 76644
