The 1844 second edition. ***This second edition contains two title-pages: the original title page for the first edition (1843) reads differently from the second title-page, as follows: 'Maunder's Treasury of History consisting of a Series of Separate Histories of the Principal States and Kingdoms in The World preceded by An Introductory Outline Sketch of Universal History from the earliest Ages to the present time.' The publisher's catalogue at the back is correctly dated March 1844. ***Black and white copper engraved frontispiece to the first original title-page of the 1843 edition, engraved by W. H. Brooke arranged as a series of miniature tableau: showing miniature scenes such as Universal deluge, Alexander taken by Caesar, Death of Caesar, Augustine preaching Christianity, Battle of Waterloo etc. etc.***Very good in brown blind embossed cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine, and gilt floral decorated titles to front board. Tiny bookbinders pale blue and black printed label to top outer corner of front pastedown: R. & J. Hilton, 37 Carlton Street, Nottingham.' Edges of boards rubbed. Corners rubbed and bumped. Head and tail of spine rubbed and creased with very small splits. 1.5cm closed splits to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine. Interior hinges tight. No inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. 178mm x 122mm. xviii prelim-pages plus 864 text-pages, with a 32-page publisher's catalogue of 'new works and new editions' dated March 1844, as called for. ***Second edition published 1844 of Samuel Maunder's Treasury of History, in its original cloth binding, in complete condition.
