The first volume, The Treatise, contains a Life of Somner by White Kennett, who was Bishop of Peterborough and like Somner a student of old english and an antiquarian, 118 pages. The Treatise itself is 132 pages. The manuscript had been sent to James Brome, Chaplain of the Cinque Ports, after Somner's death. He published it in thanks for his appointment as Chaplain in honour of Viscount Sydney of Sheppey, then Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports of which it treats. The second volume bound with the first is on the question of where in France Julius Ceasar embarked for his invasion of Britain. Somner was the author of the long used Anglo Saxon / Latin / English dictionary, "Dictionarium Saxonico-Latino-Anglicum". He was a royalist and was imprisoned and then given preferment on the Restoration of the Monarchy and was well connected with leading figures. In contemporary binding with label present but hardly legible and spine desicated and cracked but still holding, boards rubbed. Endpapers particularly and pages of the first volume slightly browned. The Portus Iccius is very clean internally though begins to brown on the final pages of the index.…
