About this Item
MONTAGUE, Charles Howard. TWO STROKES OF THE BELL: A STRANGE STORY. Boston: W.I. Harris & Co., 1886. 12mo., pictorial brown cloth, stamped in gilt; 185 pages. First Edition. An early detective fiction title, listed in Hubin. Montague [1858-1889] was also an editor at "The Boston Globe." Signed inscription from Montague on verso of the front endpaper: "With the compliments of the author, C.H. Montague." Also with the ownership blindstamp of Charles Greenough Chase, Mere Point Road, Brunswick, Maine" on the front endpaper. Believed to be the copy of Charles "Chippy" Greenough Chase [1908-1988]- a famous Maine wildlife sculptor. A scarce book and rare to find a signed copy! Good (some edgewear covers but gilt is nice & bright; one signature bit pulled but still tight; contents clean, rear hinge appears to have been tightened). $500.00. Seller Inventory # 2777
