In 1945 melden duizenden Nederlandse jongens zich aan als oorlogsvrijwilliger om 'onze Rijksgenoten in Indi� te bevrijden'. Evert-Jan Nijboer, een boerenzoon met weinig toekomstperspectief en veel idealen, geeft zich op. Hoopvol begint hij aan zijn avontuur, en aan zijn dagboek. De heenreis leest als een jongensboek, maar eenmaal op Java verandert de toon. Hij ziet vrienden sneuvelen, fotografeert massagraven en redt duizenden Javanen van een verbrandingsdood. De reis ontwikkelt zich tot een survivor's story. Bij thuiskomst zwijgt Evert-Jan, zoals zovelen.

Zeventig jaar later reist kleinzoon Ronald Nijboer zijn opa achterna, met diens dagboek in de hand. Hij onderzoekt het lot van de oorlogsvrijwilligers, die altijd een status aparte hielden. Waarom zweeg een hele generatie Indi�gangers? En wat zien we, als het zwijgen met verhalen gevuld wordt?
