Synopsis:

Advice on overcoming self-limiting behavior and achieving success in every sphere of life includes discussions on coping with pain, setbacks, unforseen pitfalls, and failure

Reviews: Ridge, an endurance athlete who was the first to swim twice around Manhattan island, here joins with health-and-fitness writer Zimmer to produce a guide to maximizing athletic performance and satisfaction from that performance. The approach begins with mental preparation: readers are encouraged to believe they can do anything they set their minds to, and urged to establish personal goals. The authors caution against going too far and show how to cope with the depression that follows a competitive event, whether won or lost. The book's second half offers information on nutrition, exercise and the like. Although intended as inspiration for achievement in any aspect of life, this book will appeal primarily to endurance athletes. January 30

Ridge swam the English Channel and twice around Manhattan. In this book she and her co-author discuss what it takes to be an endurance athlete. The stated subject of the book is "preparing the mind and body to endure." The book's first half, essentially a pep talk, is devoted to the proper mental attitude, and the second half to physical preparation. But much of the advice here can most kindly be labeled common sense. Would-be endurance athletes, nevertheless, might well find the author's enthusiasm infectious and be inspired enough to "take it to the limit." For large sports collections.
