Patrick Anderson (1915-1979) was a British-Canadian modernist poet, known for founding small literary magazines which would play a significant role in the development of modernist Canadian poetry. Having studied at Oxford and Colombia, Anderson moved to Canada in 1940 where he taught in Montreal. In 1942 he founded Preview, a literary magazine. He also wrote three poetry collections while in Montreal, the first of which was A Tent For April, published in 1945. A Tent For April was published by First Statement Press, an offshoot of First Statement literary magazine, which was founded in 1942. It too played a significant role in the Canadian modernist poetry scene, with Louis Dudek and Irving Layton both sitting on its editorial board. In 1945 First Statement magazine merged with Preview, the magazine founded by Anderson, to become the Northern Review. First Statement Press, however, would continue into the 1950s. This copy of A Tent For April is in very good condition. There is some discolouration to the wrappers, and some age-related discolouration to the pages, but the text remains bright and unblemished.
