Complete 2-volume set. 4to. Dark brown blind-ruled cloth with gilt spine lettering and front board gilt device. v, xv, 774pp; viii, 123pp. Numerous full-page heavy stock illustrations (some color and tissue-guarded), line drawings, charts, foldout partly-color maps and charts, large foldout map in rear pocket of Volume I. Very good. Faint binding edgewear only, else internally tight and near fine throughout. Tight and quite attractive first edition of this pair produced under the directorship of its famed second leader, intrepid one-armed explorer/geologist John Wesley Powell (1834-1902). Part I covers "Geology" and Part II "Irrigation." Among the many progress reports in various scientific endeavors (geologic. paleontologic, etc.) are three lengthy significant "Accompanying Papers": Nathaniel Southgate Shaler's "General Account of the Fresh-Water Morasses of the United States, with a Description of the Dismal Swamp District of Virginia and North Carolina," Roland Duer Irving and Charles Richard Van Hise's "The Penokee Iron-Bearing Series of Michigan and Wisconsin," and Charles D. Walcott's "The Fauna of the Lower Cambrian or Olenellus Zone." The loose foldout map ("Map of the United States Showing the progress of the Topographic Survey during the fiscal year 1888-9") is especially pristine and bright. Discreet ex-library, the only markings being a faint number at each spine base, small blind-embossed name on each title page and small elegant bookplate of one of Illinois' oldest public libraries on each front pastedown noting the pair were given by long-time Illinois congressman Robert R. Hitt (1834-1906). Superb set of this outstandingly, lavishly illustrated report. Seller Inventory # 45973
