Terrell was born May 2, 1861, in the extreme part of Wise County, Texas, about two hundred yards from the Denton County line. The author in his effort to portray a true picture of early Texas has compiled in an interesting manner the early incidents, not only of the Terrell family but also a knowledge of the citizens from Wise County and Texas, living not only in those primitive times but the many administrators up to the present time. Being himself a Legislator, State Treasurer and Railroad Commissioner enabled him to get close or acquainted with many of the most prominent statesmen in Texas and the United States. Some of Texas' illustrious lawyers, physicians, teachers, ministers, business men and public servants are illustrated, some for the first time. This book is interesting, constructive and informative. The author's services as Railroad Commissioner saved millions of dollars to the school fund of Texas, besides conserving oil and gas from waste. In this age of anxiety when, as in the cataclysm of our own times, with old stable human institutions, governments, kings and people are tottering in ruin around us, so in our early Texas history, when the bees, the birds and animals, together controlled the wilderness, to be supplanted by our pioneers, who carved a path in the wilderness to pave the way to our modern civilization. HISTORY, HEROISM, POLITICS are skillfully blended by this astute author and public servant?from the early [eighteen]sixties, when the ambitions and aspirations of our early pioneers were confronted and contested by the native Indians. These were the days when history was being formed; when nature and the Indians were in control and birds and wild animals enjoyed this wild domain. These were heroic years, where courage, bravery and fortitude were necessary for human existence. The author in his own inimitable way shows the progress of Wise County from its primitive state to the present. The author refreshes the political history of Texas through the years, showing the wisdom in the various laws introduced and adopted toward the public interest, much of which, as a Legislator, State Treasurer and Railroad Commissioner he was in no small way instrumental in accomplishing.
