Spine ends & joints repaired, it is now a clean & sturdy copy. This particular copy has the ownership inscription of Joshua Fry Speed. Speed was Abraham Lincoln?s four-year roommate and close lifelong friend. The 2024 documentary film Lover of Men suggests that Lincoln and Speed had a gay relationship. For much of his life, Speed was a lawyer in Louisville, and from 1848-1850, he was a Representative in the Kentucky House of Representatives. *****Provenance: From the great-great-grandson of Edward Dorsey Hobbs, who was Joshua Speed?s brother-in-law. One of Hobbs? slaves married one of Speed?s slaves. Hobbs? grandchild was taught to swim by one of Speed?s freed slaves.
