Marcello Malpighi's (1628-1694) second work, which is composed of letters addressed to his colleagues Carlo Fracassati (1630-1672) and Giovanni Borelli, followed by Fracassato's commentary. In De lingua, Malpighi reported peeling two layers from the surface of the tongue and thereby exposing the papillary body, in which he distinguished three orders of papillae (or sensory receptors), and speculated that these could be stimulated by "sapid" particles dissolved in the saliva. His treatise entitled De cerebro deals with the white substance of the central nervous system, which Malpighi discovered to be composed of the same fibers that form the nerves. (Norman).
