Thank God It's Monday: Making Your Work Fulfilling and Finding Fulfilling Work

Discusses the nature of job satisfaction, explains how to evaluate one's job, and examines the importance of money, personal fulfillment, and learning opportunities

This is a well-written guide for those seeking the so-called perfect job, once defined by Theodore Roosevelt as "the chance to work hard at work worth doing." Using information culled from Jungian psychology, modern literature, career counseling and Zen Buddhism, among other sources, the authors offer broad strategies, specific tools and lots of Leo Buscagliastyle encouragement. They propose three major measures of work satisfactionand then set forth strategies for balancing these spheres of satisfaction. Among their mind tricks: "Zenning it" (convincing yourself that your boring job isn't a waste of time), "Learning and Changing" (turning your job into a "school for life") and finding "Optimal Work," work that matches your dreams.

TGIM is about finding "your work in life, not just having a job that gets you by." To bring this about the authors recommend taking a "job physical," by which they mean determining one's values, conducting a work inventory, engaging in self-assessment, and trying to uncover the hidden sources of one's actions. They then suggest examining one's attitudes toward three levels of job satisfaction: money, doing work suited to one's tastes, and being able to "give of oneself to others." They end with prescriptions on how to achieve one's goals. The book should prove helpful to people in all walks of life whom self-distrust and lack of opportunity keep from realizing their best. A.
