This is a collection of six issues of "The Theatre" magazine bound in the publisher's original custom binding. The photo-rich magazine provides extensive coverage of performers and productions on the New York stage in the early 20th Century. It also includes coverage of other elements of the cultural landscape, particularly fashion, opera, vaudeville and early motion pictures. Each issue includes superb colored images for front cover portraits of leading players (usually actresses) of the day as well as color back cover ads. This volume is distinguished by six lavisly colored cover portraits featuring: Lillian Lorraine; Mary Ryan; Blanche Ring; Pauline Chase; Mary Boland; and Edith Wynne Matthison. Interior pages feature reviews of new productions, features on individual actresses and actors, discussion of trends of theater and entertainment, theater fashions, and opera. There are dozens of photos in each issue, many shot by major Broadway photographers of the day. Features in this volume include: Circus clowns; G.K. Chesterton's Toy Theatre; drama in India; Kitty Gordon; and Anna Pavlowa in rehearsal. Plays featured include: John Galsworthy's "Strife"; "The Cheater"; "The Follies of 1910" "Smith" by Somerset Maugham; "The Gamblers"; the Passion Play in Oberammegau Germany; and "Blue Bird" by Maurice Maeterlinck. Full page color ads include Mennen Powder, Pierce Arrow Motor Cars; Warner's Corsets; Baker Motors and Victor. The Pierce Arrow ad in the December issue is quite notable. It is a lithograph of a painting by Taos, New Mexico cowboy artist Edward Borein, "Pierce Arrow and the Great West." The lithograph is in excellent condition. There is also a full page Gillette ad on an interior page in the July issue that features five Major League baseball stars including Honus Wagner and Frank Chance. The magazine is 10" by 14". The binding features a custom logo on the cover. Covers and interior pages generally in excellent shape. Seller Inventory # 004697
