First edition, first printing of von Neumann's important work on the theory of automata, which contains the fundamental details of his Universal Constrictor, a self-replicating machine in a cellular automata environment. Edited from two manuscripts that remained unpublished upon his death, the book was assembled and completed by Arthur W. Burks. A foundational work, considered a cornerstone of automata theory, complex systems, and artificial life. Uncommon in this condition.
