Folio, bound in period-style brown polished calf with red leather label (spine un-evenly faded to tan). London: Printed by M.W. for Thomas Basset & Ralph Smith, 1682. First edition of this translation of "De Jure Belli ac Pacis" -- being the third printing in English. Some minor uniform toning to pages and with one red ink stamp at foot of title, still a near fine copy with all pages rather clean. Grotius' Rights of War and Peace is a classic of modern public international law which lays the foundation for a universal code of law and which strongly defends the rights of individual agents - states as well as private persons - to use their power to secure themselves and their property. --Butler XII.
