Item description from seller

Philadelphia: Abraham Collins, [1843]. First American edition. Octavo (8 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches; 210 x 130 mm). [2], ii, [5]-72 pp. Bound without pages 73-104 which contain the "Appendix" [pg 73-95], "Conclusion" [pg 95-96] and "Reviews" [pg 97-104] (Possibly not issued with all copies and not found in the English edition). But text of the "Letters" is complete. A scarce items being that we have found no copies of this at auction in the past 60 years and we could only locate 3 copies at libraries. Full contemporary sheep. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. A few instances of staining throughout. Small piece of lower right corner missing from title-page, not affecting text. Overall a very nice copy. "Oxlee, John (1779-1854), philologist and writer on theology.Oxlee's minute study of the Hebrew writings led him to differ on many important points both from the Jewish and Christian interpreters. In his Three Letters to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1842) and Three More Letters (1845) he stated his reasons for declining to take any part in the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, and his grounds for not believing in the personality of the devil. " (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) Rosenbach 516. HBS 67191. $2,500.
