Internally good.; This copy inscribed by the author in the upper margin of the front wrapper: "from the Author with kind regards - 22/8/85". 41 pages + yellow addendum slip. Original printed green paper wrappers. Page dimensions: 242 x 152mm. The first and longest paper is on the Maori language. The second is on innovations and alterations in English and allied languages. The final short paper is on the curious matter of the passing of civilizations, and the idea, attributed by some to Macaulay, that one day there will be a "New Zealander sitting on the ruins of London Bridge". Colenso notes - "I have found this simile, or idea, both in its rough and in its more finished state, in no less than five authors of note who preceded Macaulay; four of whom are English, and one French. The first is Horace Walpole [. . .] In a published letter of Walpole's to Mason, written in 1744, he says, - 'At last some curious traveller from Lima, will visit England, and give a description of the ruins of St. Paul's, like the Editions of Baalbec and Palmyra.'" - page 38.
