First edition in English translation, by the estimable Charles Reznikoff. Two volumes (complete). About fine copies. The author styled himself Benjamin II after the medieval traveller Benjamin of Tudela. Previous to his journey to North America he published a book in French on his extensive travels in Muslim lands of the Middle East and North Africa. The German original of this narrative, published in Hanover, was discovered by Oscar Handlin, who provides an introduction. Benjamin supported himself while crossing the continent by acting as an itinerant preacher. He got as far as California, which was in the midst of the Gold Rush.
