From the Preface to English Edition: "Nine years have gone by since this book was first written. As in every field of study, new documents have of course become available during that period and new research work has been done by scholars in various countries. The book could therefore have been expanded and made more bulky. But as I said in my original preface, my aim in writing it was to give an overall overview of Tibetan civilization and not to produce a complete manual of Tibetan studies. A number of necessary adjustments have been made, new information has been made of use, and two paragraphs have been added to the historical survey to bring it up to the present. Otherwise, I believe the book remains up to date as far as our knowledge of Tibet goes. --RA Stein, September 1971"

The current owner, anthropologist and writer Don Messerschmidt, PhD, is known for his research and writings in and on the Himalayas. He has published books and articles internationally since the 1960s when he first lived in Nepal as an American Peace Corps volunteer. He went on to enhance his understanding of Himalayan peoples and places as an independent researcher and on numerous consultancies. For over a half-century, he has been engaged in field studies, university professorships, and writing about the rich cultures of Bhutan, Nepal, North India, and Tibet. Along the way, he amassed an extensive library of Himalayan studies and has written several of his own, including two prize-winners. He has also been an editor for two regional magazines and has been called upon to pen promotional blurbs and forewords for Himalayan-oriented books written by other authors.
