AGATHA CHRISTIE - THERE IS A TIDE. (published in the U.K. as "Taken As The Flood"), published by Collins Canada, copyright 1948, First (and only) Printing (no references to subsequent printings on copyright page - there was never a 2nd printing), lists to "The Labors of Hercules" to the left of title page, white endpapers, light grey cloth boards with orange lettering to spine. UNTIL 1945 DODD MEAD PUBLISHED THE CANADIAN EDITION THAT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE U.S. EDITION BUT IT SAID "PUBLISHED IN CANADA" ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE. IN 1949 (STARTING WITH CROOKED HOUSE) COLLINS EXPORTED U.K. EDITIONS (UNPRICED) TO CANADA (LIKE IT DID TO AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND). BUT BECAUSE OF POST-WWII PAPER RESTRICTIONS IN THE U.K., COLLINS COULD NOT PRINT AGATHA CHRISTIE BOOKS FOR THE CANADIAN MARKET. AS A RESULT 3 BOOKS (THE HOLLOW, LABORS OF HERCULES, & THERE IS A TIDE/TAKEN AT THE FLOOD) WERE PRINTED BY DODD MEAD (SO THE BOOKS LOOK LIKE U.S. EDITIONS) BUT THE PUBLISHER IS ACTUALLY COLLINS ON THE DJ & BOOK SPINE & TITLE/COPYRIGHT PAGES. THESE 3 "COLLINS CANADA" BOOKS ARE VERY VERY SCARCE. Book has one creased page corner, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside, no foxing to pages or endpapers or outer page edges, outer page edges have a slight age darkening (no dust soiling), faint evidence of removed bookplate to ffe otherwise clean endpapers with no soiling or staining, no splitting to internal hinges, no spine lean, no wear to board edges, barest hint of wear to board corners, slight wear to spine tips, no spine sun fading/darkening, no rubbing to spine lettering, slight handling/dust soiling to boards, otherwise no significant soiling or discoloration to boards, no bumped board corners, no fading to spine lettering. Book also comes with a color fascimile of the CANADA COLLINS SCARCE Dust jacket to provide protection from damage and to improve its appearance on a shelf. Overall a VG+ book of a rare 1940s era Agatha Christie 1st Collins Canada printing. I have a number of other U.K. and U.S. Agatha Christie 1st printing hardcover books up for sale.
