Institute of International Relations, National Chengchi University, Republic of Cina. 170pp. Now known as Ding Ling, Ting Ling (1904-1986) was the pen name of Jiang Bingzhi, a prominent early Communist activist writer. She was imprisoned, and her husband executed by the Kuomintang for her Communist activities and writing. Later she was censured by Mao for her Feminist writings, and imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. She authored over 300 works, won a Soviet literary prize, and was a guest at the University of Iowa's writing program. This biography and assessment of her contribution lists the major events of her life as ending in 1956, with her purge. Light rubbing to extremities of green wrappers, else fine. Her early writings gave expression to the feelings of intellectuals, and of women in particular. Her writings attracted large numbers of young people. Her keen individualism and her freedom-seeking spirit were incompatible with the basic nature of Communism. In 1933 she was arrested for taking part in political activities. She later fled to Yenan. Although she initially thrived under the Chinese Communist regime in 1957 the Party Committee of the Writer's union accused her of being a 'rightist' and sent into obscurity. Good.
