About this Item
Fine condition salmon cloth boards with black front cover and spine lettering contained in near fine non-priced clipped color illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket displays the original $3.95 price and shows minor rubbing to upper and lower spine edges. The dust jacket front cover color illustration is quite vibrant and in fine condition, as is the rear black-and-white dust jacket photo of William Faulkner. All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the spine is exceedingly tight and square. Second Printing. "In the over-all design of the trilogy devoted to the origin, rise and dominance of the Snopes family, The Town is the second novel. Its predecessor is The Hamlet. Its successor, The Mansion, will ultimately conclude the chronicle of the Snopes', who took root in Yoknapatawpha County and proliferated through and beyond it until they outmaneuvered and overpowered a society and a culture that had little defense against their invincible rapacity. By returning to the town of Jefferson, William Faulkner is home again in the world that he brought into being and peopled with the population of his imagination. There are the irrepressible tribe of Snopes, the natively wise V.K. Ratliff, the family Mallison, Lawyer Gavin Stevens, the De Spains, the Varners, and two women, Eula and Linda, who take a prominent place in the memorable and variegated gallery of characters created by the 1950 Nobel laureate in literature. The Town, by itself, is a distinct entity; as the second part of the Snopes triptych, it is a unit, conceived and executed in an undertaking that, in its entirety, will be considered an impressive addition to the slowly growing list of distinguished American novels." - from the inner front jacket flap.
