London, Sampson, Low, Son & Co., 1863. Octavo, xvi, 408, 16 (publisher's catalogue, June 1863) pages plus 15 tinted lithographs and a large folding map (670 × 480 mm) in an endpocket. Blind-decorated and gilt-pictorial cloth (possibly lightly varnished) a little worn and marked, bumped at the extremities, and sunned on the spine; endpapers offset or a little marked, with a bookplate removed from the front pastedown, and another now mounted on the front free endpaper (below a presentation inkstamp); sporadic foxing (confined mainly to the edges, first and last few leaves, and the plates and adjacent leaves; endpocket map a little discoloured from contact with the acidic board of the rear cover, with minimal conservation along one fold (affecting slightly the title); overall a very presentable copy. 'John Davis was a member of the South Australian relief expedition, led by John McKinlay, to search for Burke and Wills. The expedition travelled to Cooper Creek and north almost to the Gulf of Carpentaria . [They then] made for Port Denison (Bowen), some 960km away in Queensland' (Valmai Hankel, in her introduction to the 1996 facsimile edition). Seller Inventory # 114101

Octavo, [vi], xvi, 408 pages plus 15 colour plates and a large folding map in an endpocket. Green cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in blind; an excellent copy. 'John Davis was a member of the South Australian relief expedition, led by John McKinlay, to search for Burke and Wills. The expedition travelled to Cooper Creek and north almost to the Gulf of Carpentaria . [They then] made for Port Denison [Bowen], some 960km away in Queensland.' Australiana Facsimile Editions Number 211. One of only 600 copies (including 99 copies of a deluxe edition); both versions are long out of print. First Edition; Demy 8vo; pp. xvi, 408, 16 (book advertisements); colour frontispiece and 13 other coloured tinted lithograph full page plates, 1 text wood engraving, index, lacks the folding map, bound in half brown leather with brown cloth boards, raised bands, title labels, title lettered in gilt on label, nice provenance being the Dr. George Mackaness copy being item 392 in his number one catalogue of 1967 with his bookplate on the front endpaper, some foxing to first and last few pages, occasional foxing throughout, good copy (lacking the folding map).
