Item description from seller

Hardcover. Condition: new. Dust jacket condition: very good, with just the gentlest of shelf wear to the rear. Konecky & Konecky New York first edition thus (facsimile reprint of an earlier publication). "Tragedy and Triumph" is a facsimile edition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's last Antarctic expedition of 1911-12, which ended with the death of his party of five on their 800 mile return trek from the South Pole, when the survivors were only 11 miles from the base camp and safety. It reproduces his record of the expedition. The Scott party is still regarded as heroic in their courage, endurance, self-sacrifice and fortitude. Scott's journal describes eloquently all the moods of the Antarctic, ranging from calm and beautiful to vicious and deadly storms and horrific conditions. The journal begins with preparations for the expedition and ends with his poignant final entry, made when close to death from hunger, exhaustion and privation --- "For God’s sake look after our people." The journal was published soon after World War One and had long been out of print when this facsimile edition was printed. In is not dated but probably 1993, with this date appearing on the dust jacket. . Photos, Maps, Sketches (illustrator). 521pp, 17 b/w photos, several being double page, e/paper maps, reproduction of Scott's last entry, in text sketches, plan. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions. We pack our books properly and ship daily from the UK.…
