Transaction of the Inverness Scientific Society and Field Club - Vol. IV 1888 to 1895

1898. First edition. viii, 401pp., 7 black and white illustrations, and a 1-page list of books in the Society's library. The Inverness Scientific Society and Field Club was founded on 8 December 1875, with William Jolly as its first President, at a time when 'Science' meant 'Knowledge'. It was formed for the study, investigation and exploration of the district, and there were to be 'readings of papers' from October to April and 'Excursions during the summer months.' Over the first fifty years nine volumes of Transactions were published recording the talks given and the expeditions to interesting places. Rising costs seem to have checked publication in the 1920s. In 1973 the title was officially changed to the Inverness Field Club, which had been its accepted name for some time. The present book is the fourth volume of the Transactions of the Society, and records the work of seven years from the beginning of session 1888-89 to the end of 1895. As well as containing accounts of excursions to Kyllachy, the Black Isle, and other places, it includes papers on The Picts by Alex. Macbain; The Green Balls of Loch Kildonan, South Uist, by Rev. Stewart; Dornoch in the 18th Century by Rev. Grant; and Inverness at the End of the 17th Century by Kenneth Macdonald. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and a few dents on the fore edge of both boards. There is bumping to the spine ends and the title label has some soiling and chipping at the rear edge. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the first and last few pages, including the title-page. There is no inscription.…
