First edition. 82, [2]pp. 16mo. The rare first edition of this early western guidebook. Howes located only three copies of this little rarity. The guide includes travel routes, tables of roads, and general information about the western frontier and towns in the states and territories covered. By 1849 at least sixteen editions of this guide had appeared. "One of the genuinely rare books of mid-western Americana" (Eberstadt). Howes S927; Graff 3967; Sabin 91144; Eberstadt 103:256 Publisher's cloth-backed green paper covered boards, letterpress label on the upper cover, spine and upper cover hinge repaired, boards worn. Provenance: General Theological Seminary (perforated stamps, bookplate).
