Illustrated with sections of 60 black-and-white photographs and a double page map frontispiece of Ceylon. "The finding of sunken treasure has a never-ending fascination. In 1961 Arthur Clarke's associate Mike Wilson was at the Great Basses Reef off Ceylon, making undersea photographs of sharks, groupers, and other fish. Suddenly Wilson saw below him in the depths, the evidence of a sunken ship. The wreck was in water of such surging power that for only about two months of the year was it possible to dive. The first season Wilson and two American boys made a preliminary investigation from headquarters in a lighthouse. But what they found was enough to make Wilson eager for a real exploration. It was only in 1963 that the real expedition could be made, this time from a base on land nearby, with a small boat, the Ran Muthu, and with Wilson, Clarke, and others in the party. Besides several brass cannon, pistols, and other objects, they found bags of silver coins made in 1702 for the Mogul emperor Aurangzeb. Archur Clarke recounts the whole exciting adventure. Sixty photographs form an important part of the story." from the inner front jacket flap. Seller Inventory # 003905
