A very presentable copy of the 1860 true 1st edition of this treatise on the methods of finite differences. These methods were used to calculate tables of logarithms, sines, tangents and other mathematical functions, as well as actuarial tables, tables of interest, astronomical and navigational tables. Charles Babbage's "Difference Engine" was also designed to make use of this method. Tight and VG to VG+ in its original pebbled, dark-green cloth, with still-bright gilt-titling at the spine. Light wear and one very small closed tear along the spine edges, the minor remains of a former tag to the front pastedown. Otherwise, very clean internally. 12mo, 248 pgs. of text plus a wonderful 16 pg. "Descriptive Catalogue" of Macmillan's "Cambridge Class Books" at the rear. ("Origins of Cyberspace", # 226).
