Only a handful of copies with the jacket have appeared at auction in the last 50 years and those results include one reappearing copy. It is more than a swatch of early Lawrence. It unmistakably reveals where The Rainbow and Women in Love come from, and though it is certainly a compendium of all his faults, it is also a coherent assemblage of nearly all his virtues. Nor are they neatly balanced against one another. They are instead strewn every which way over the whole landscape of the book.
