A very scarce first Dublin edition of this well-known poem by William Hayley. The first Dublin edition, issued the same year as the first London printing. Rather scarce. ESTC no: T89505. Collated, bound without the half title. With publisher's adverts to the rear. 'The Triumphs of Temper' is William Hayley's best known poem. It was so popular that it ran to numerous editions, there had been eighteen editions by 1824. This poem chronicles the trials and tribulations that his fictitious heroine Serena faces. It explores how she overcame them through her virtues of a pleasant nature and sweet temper. This poem is a morality tale for young women of the eighteenth century. With the bookplate of John Harwood to the front pastedown. With his inscription dated 1796 to the bookplate. Below his name Harwood has written 'Deane'. It is possible that this book once belonged to Reverend Jon Harwood, Clerk of Deane, Hampshire. In a contemporary mottled calf binding. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the head of spine. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
