Two first UK editions of these important 20th century works of literature by Henry Miller, known for their candid depictions of sexuality. Tropic of Cancer, published in 1963 is the first UK edition, later issue without the errata tipped in to the Emerson quote. Tropic of Capricorn, published in 1964 is the first edition, first impression, with no further impressions stated. Two important works of twentieth-century literature, Tropic of Cancer (1963) and Tropic of Capricorn (1964). Written by American author Henry Miller, these two works are semi-autobiographical and narrate the author's early writing career, but also include fictive and free-form elements. These two works of literature were extremely controversial when first published in the United States in the 1930s, due to their candid depictions and descriptions of sex and sexuality. The United States Justice Department banned the original editions of bothTropic of Cancer andTropic of Capricorn. When the 1961 Grove Press edition ofTropic of Cancer was released, it led to the obscenity trials that reviewed American laws of pornography. In 1964, the US Supreme Court finally declared these works non-obscene. Two exceptionally bright copies of these important works of twentieth-century literature. In the original publisher's cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally in lovely condition with just minor shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine. Dust wrappers are smart with chipping, creasing and slight loss to the extremities. Tropic of Capricorn is sunned to the spine as is common with this work. Tape repairs to the reverse of the Tropic of Cancer. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot to the fore edge. Near Fine. Seller Inventory # 851K17
