A very scarce printing of this work written by a key figure in the Rye House plot following his arrest. This was printed following his execution for treason. The Rye House Plot was a plan to assassinate King Charles II and his brother, James, Duke of York. A single leaf, as called for. ESTC reference no: R2015. This is Walcott's perception of events. He wrote this letter from Newgate prison after his condemnation, and was delivered to his son immediately before his execution. Walcott wished to lead an attack on the royal guards but drew the line at the assassination of the King. The plot leaked in June 1683 when Josiah Keeling gave information to Sir Leoline Jenkins. It was Keeling's testimony that was used at Walcott's trial. Thomas Walcott was the first conspirator to go to trial, as a meeting of the plotters was held at his house. He wrote to Leoline Jenkins offering a confession in return for a pardon. However, Walcott was hanged, drawn and quartered. In this letter, Walcott reflects on his life, mortality, position with God and how he did not wish to kill the King. 'I told them the Killing of the King would carry such a blemish and stain with it, as would descend to Posterity'. A contemporary source of this royal assassination plot. Disbound, as issued.
