About this Item
If you loved the Codice / Codex Borgia and/or love Mexican Aztec Pre Columbian Art, this one is definitely for you. The Facsimile Edition of the Codex Tudela is a carefully produced reproduction of a significant 16th-century Mesoamerican manuscript that provides insight into pre-Hispanic and early colonial indigenous life. The facsimile, published in 2002, is a faithful copy of the original codex, which was created between 1553 and 1554. The manuscript consists of 118 pages, richly illustrated with 83 full-color images, depicting rituals, deities, daily activities, and the fusion of indigenous and European traditions following the Spanish conquest. The content is divided into three sections: the first part, known as the Magliabechiano-Tudela fragment, illustrates religious ceremonies, deities, and calendar-related practices; the second part, referred to as the Ritos y Costumbres, describes indigenous customs, including sacrifices and divination rituals; the third section, the Indígena, is written in Nahuatl and Spanish, providing an indigenous perspective on colonial rule and Christianity. The Codex Tudela is considered a crucial ethnographic document for understanding Aztec religious beliefs, social structures, and the early effects of European colonization on Mesoamerican cultures. Though its precise authorship remains unknown, it is believed to have been compiled by indigenous scribes under Spanish supervision. The original codex is currently housed in the Museo de América in Madrid, where it remains an essential artifact for researchers studying the transition from Aztec to colonial society. Commentary volume accompanying the facsimile edition is in Spanish only. Pre-Columbian art facsimile.
