Octavo (22cm); full contemporary gilt-tooled calf, recased with original gilt spine laid down preserving green gilt spine label; [6],470pp. Leather a bit scuffed and rubbed at margins, upper cover unevenly darkened, faint tide staining to bottom half of textblock, light but extensive and learned pencil marginalia throughout. A Very Good copy overall. Two of the most important works by Richard Waston, Bishop of Llandaff (1737-1816), compiled here into one volume. The Apology for Christianity first appeared in 1776; the Apology for the Bible appeared twenty years later, in 1796. Provenance: Two ownership ex libris to front pastedown, of George Agar-Ellis, 1st Baron of Dover (1797-1833) and Roger Senhouse (1899-1970), the publisher and lover of Lytton Strachey.
