Pre-revolution Boston imprint by minister at Old West Church liberal theologian, Jonathan Mayhew (1720-1766).? These sermons celebrate the British conquest of Canada during the Seven Years' War as a triumph of Protestantism and civil liberty over French Catholic power.? In all of Mayhew's sermons he urges colonial union and resistance to tyranny in any form, so although he praises Britain's upholding of liberty here, this core argument would soon underpin Revolutionary ideology in America.? Scarce.? We note just 3 auction records for this imprint in the last 30+ years.? Evans 8668. 8vo, 69pp. Half title and final two leaves provided in facsimile. Modern quarter calf, marbled paper boards, gilt lettered spine label. Contemporary note on the death of Mayhew to verso of title, with another note blacked out. Text clean and very good.
