At present there is much argumentation concerning a 'Scottish Renaissance,' and although some of it may be undisciplined, it all makes for good in that it advertises the indisputable fact that there is a reinvigorated creative and literary activity in the North. Some ask: 'Is Scots a language or a dialect? Is it dead, and if so, can it be revived?' Others ask: 'Should patriotic Scotsmen discard trousers for kilts, abjure cocoa for whisky, or suppress 'The Scottish Orchestra' in the interests of bagpipes?'".
