These two papers, which appeared one after the other in the same issue of the journal, were issued in a single offprint. The first eight publications by Linus Pauling and Robert Corey on the alpha helix and pleated sheets of polypeptide chains appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in April and May 1951. Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances.".
