First U.S. edition of each volume and first separate editions of this series of 16-page inserts from Der Druckspiegel (extra sheets were made available to the publishers for this U.S. production). Conceived of and published to present "experimental American typography to the European graphic arts community . [while] providing our European colleagues with something characteristically American to read about America." Each volume profusely illustrated with drawings and photographs with color and black-and-white graphic designs by Herb Lubalin (No. 1); Robert Brownjohn, Ivan Chermayeff, and Thomas Geismar (No. 2); Gene Federico (No. 3); and Lester Beall (No. 4). 6.75 x 9.5" stapled paperwraps in various muted colors, each printed in black. Housed in publisher s blue paper-covered slipcase. Near fine in like slipcase showing only a few scuffs and light shelf wear.
