THE UNCIVILIZED RACES OF MEN IN ALL COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD BY REV. J.G. WOOD 1871 2 VOLS. I am pleased to offer a vintage two volume set of large hardcover books titled: The Uncivilized Races of Man in All Countries of the World by Rev. J.G. Wood. The sub-title reads: A comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics. These large hardcover books (7 ¼ x 10 ½ inches, Vol. I to page 693, and Vol. II to page 1481) was published by J.B. Burr and Company of Hartford, dated 1871. These two large hardcover books are lavishly illustrated with detailed engravings with images of all the peoples they discuss. The books include 443 plates. The books are bound in pebbled brown cloth with blind-stamped decorations and framing on the covers and gilt titles on the spines. It is an incredible set but spoiler alert; this set of books is far from politically correct and shows how far we have come in what were once attitudes about peoples in other countries. I believe that the set has merit because of the variety of cultures it discusses the level of detail in the many, many illustrations. Condition: This set of two hardcover books is in good condition only. On the one hand the boards are rubbed and bumped, and especially so for Vol. II where the spine is splitting off its backing and the bottom tip is frayed (please see the photos). Inside the books are unmarked although there is some toning and foxing to the early and late pages, the bulk of the interior pages are free from both defects. There is some random and not too frequent small examples of soiling and smudges but nothing too significant. The hinges of Vol. I are intact, and the front hinge of Vol. II is cracked with the rear intact. The bindings, in both cases, no doubt due to their size and age, are a bit shaken but still together. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
