RARE copy of this 19th century work of fiction, which contains what is thought to be the first known use in a work of fiction of the term "base ball" to describe the game. 224 pages (plus an additional 4 pages of advertisements from the publisher); illustrated with a few drawings. Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and gilt pictorial stamping, blind-stamped borders and decorations - has some wear on the corners and spine edges, light rub marks, front inner hinge cracked, penciled inscription on flyleaf, light age-toning of pages; title page has rough interior edge.
