First Edition. Good book in a Good dust jacket. Foxing and general wear to both the book and dust jacket. Published in 1930, Uncle Sham is a critical and satirical examination of American society, written by Indian lawyer, journalist, and political thinker Kanhaya Lal Gauba (also known as K. L. Gauba). The title plays on "Uncle Sam" - the national personification of the United States - rebranded here as "Uncle Sham" to suggest hypocrisy and moral decline. Themes and Content: Gauba's book offers a blistering critique of the United States, addressing topics such as: ? Racism, particularly against African Americans. ? Materialism and the excesses of American capitalism. ? Imperialism and U.S. foreign policy. ? Social hypocrisy, especially in contrast with America's self-image as a land of liberty and democracy. The book is known for its polemical tone, intended to provoke debate and challenge the American narrative of moral superiority. Gauba wrote it after a visit to the U.S., where he observed and documented social inequalities and cultural contradictions. Historical Context: Written during the interwar period, when colonialism and global power structures were being questioned, Uncle Sham resonated in anti-colonial and intellectual circles. It was also controversial and, in some places, banned for its harsh critique of a major Western power.
