Published by James S. Virtue in 1860. A First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Page number:161. Brown leather embossed boards. Five bands and a smart red label to the spine. Gilt lettering. A neat booksellers label on the first endpaper states that the book was purchased in Birmingham, and embossed lettering on the cover, and a label inside, indicate that it was given as a prize to a student at The Birmingham School of Design. Marbled end papers and red end block. Chapters are entitled: Similarities that exist between plants at some period of growth; Similarity of the mode of growth: Unity traceable in all varieties of the root; The stem; The bud; The Leaf; The inflorescence; The flower; The fruit; The seed and ovule; Tracing and unity between the parts described in the last chapter; Unity existing in plants as deduced from classification; Unity as deduced from the arrangements of their parts; Habits of the parts of plants; Unity from the poetic and artistic phases of plants; Unity from the vital force and Unity between all plants, from general considerations. 300 black and white images.
