First edition, 4to, 2 volumes, pp. [8] plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; [2] & unpaginated lexicon; engraved illustrations throughout text plus 60 engraved plates at the rear (many composite), showing everything from alphabets, anatomy, architecture and astronomy to ship-building and zoology; a number of other smaller illustrations in the text, largely heraldic; full contemporary calf, rebacked, old spines (darkened) laid down; some uneven fading along the edges of the boards; bookplate of Dr. Sydney Ross. Crabb (1778-1851) "commenced the study of medicine, but being unable to endure the dissecting room resigned his medical studies to become assistant to a bookseller" (DNB). He was the successful compiler of a number of legal digests and schoolbooks, several German instruction books, and miscellaneous dictionaries, including a popular Dictionary of English Synonyms which remains in print to this day.
